A race for the history books! Bronislaw Komorowski wins Polish presidency!
A surge of sympathy after his twin brother was killed in a plane crash was not enough to propel Jaroslaw Kaczynski to the Polish presidency, as results from Sunday's election gave a narrow victory to his centre-right rival Bronislaw Komorowski. Bronislaw Komorowski has been officially declared the winner of the Polish presidential election. According to election officials the acting president won 53.01% of the vote while rival Jaroslaw Kaczynski got 46.99%. Sunday's ballot was required under Polish law after an earlier round of voting failed to give either candidate more than 50 percent of the vote. The election has been dominated by a catastrophic plane crash. Jaroslaw Kaczynski is the twin of former President Lech Kaczynski, who died in a plane crash with 95 others in April. The former president and his wife were killed in western Russia on their way to a service commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Russian massacre of Polish prisoners of war in the village of Katyn. In a victory speech, Komorowski said: "Today democracy has won, our Polish democracy. It is important not to foment divisions but to build a sense of unity. I congratulate Poland and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for turning out to vote in such large numbers." A father of five grown-up children, Komorowski will be Poland's fourth democratically-elected president since the fall of communism in 1989.
